Bits and Pieces

This week’s “Teach Me Tuesdays,” a cultural arts exploration unit, was on the craze of scrapbooking.

A scrapbooking lesson was held in the Grand Ballroom of Martin Luther King Jr. University Union Tuesday night>

Tina Moore, owner of Moore Memories, was the instructor for scrapbook night and has been scrapbooking for nine years.

Moore, like many in the scrapbooking field, started as a hobby that became a career.

“I started scrapbooking while I was pregnant, and I started my company last month to support my habit,” Moore said.

Seven students attended the event, but the turnout was not a problem.

“These events are meant to be small and more focused on the people,” said Teri Atkinson, graduate adviser to the cultural arts department.

Attendees were taught to make a non-traditional scrapbook out of brown paper lunch bags tied together with ribbon. Participants were welcomed to an array of colored papers and craft scissors with which to create their scrapbooks.

Ribbons and glue sticks were the final ingredients to hold it all together.

The scrapbooks were created in a pre-made fashion. This means no one brought photographs with them, so the pages were ready to add the pictures.

“I had fun,” said freshman DeAnna McKinney. “It was something different, and I learned something, too.

“You are missing out on what its all about,” McKinney said for those who did not attend scrapbook night.

Candice Cousins, chairman of cultural arts for University Board, was pleased with the workshop.

“I am happy with the results. It was something different, and I think everyone had a good time,” Cousins said. Past “Teach Me Tuesdays” have included belly dancing and meringue night and Cousins has many plans for the future.

“(Cousins) is very innovative and comes up with lots of ideas,” Atkinson said.

For Cousins, “Teach Me Tuesdays” is all about showing people a different side of Eastern.

“I am trying to bring more diversity to Eastern,” Cousins said. “That is one thing I feel this campus is lacking. If I can help with these events, that makes me happy.”
