‘Suspicious behavior’ under investigation

Reports of an attack and other suspicious behavior are currently under investigation by the University Police Department.

A police statement said it was reported on Feb. 15, that a female Eastern student was followed along Fourth Street between the softball field to the W lot, where she was allegedly molested by an unidentified white male at approximately 8 p.m. on Feb. 8.

Another report was also made on Feb. 15 by a female Eastern student who said she was followed at approximately 8 p.m. on Feb. 7, along the same stretch of road by a man who matches the above description.

The man has been described as an older male, possibly 30 years of age, according to the police statement.

Police Chief Adam Due said the victims, both white females, waited a week after the incidents to come to the police.

There are no leads, Due said, and there have been no more reports since the initial incidents.

“We want (students) to be alert when they’re out there,” Due said.

Mike Tozer, a counselor with the Counseling Center, said it is important for people to make sure to be around groups of at least two or three people when walking at night, especially if intoxicated, to avoid such incidents.

“Try to make sure if you go anywhere don’t go alone,” Tozer said. “Pay attention to your intuition. If you think you’re being followed, don’t second guess yourself. It’s better to be safe than sorry.”

Tozer also recommends that students, both men and women, know emergency contacts and where to find an emergency phone on campus.

“Make a lot of noise if you feel you’re being followed,” Tozer said. “It’s OK to scream and yell. The worst thing is if you assume you’re not going to be hurt.”
