Gamble for a good cause

Students can gamble for a good cause tonight in Lawson Hall’s lobby.

The hall councils of Taylor, Lawson and Andrews halls will sponsor a casino night from 8 to 10 p.m. to benefit The Learning Disability Association of America.

Danny Elchert, a resident assistant in Taylor Hall, came up with the idea.

“I knew that I wanted to do some sort of fundraiser,” Elchert said.

Learning disabilities affect a lot of different people, he said, and he was interested in doing an event to benefit those who struggle with them.

“A lot of people don’t know too much about learning disabilities,” Elchert said.

“…I battle with a learning disability, and I know other people do too.”

A door charge will be donated to The Learning Disability Association of America.

“We’re collecting $2 at the door, but more is accepted,” said Chad Sutton, a resident assistant in Taylor Hall who will be working a Texas Holdem table at the event.

If the event raises more than $500, Elchert will shave his head. He said he is known around campus for his trademark “Justin Timberlake hair.”

“It’s a pretty big deal for me to shave it off,” he said.

Nevertheless, Elchert hopes to exceed his goal of $500.

Players will receive fake money and play games like blackjack, roulette, craps, Texas Holdem and bingo, Elchert said.

Raffle prizes will be given away throughout the night.

Players will use their fake money to bid for bigger prizes, like a new DVD player in an auction at the end of the night.
