Friday blood drive not quite as successful as first

The second blood drive of the week wasn’t as successful in meeting its goal as the first.

Volunteers from the Student Center and the Newman Catholic Center hosted a blood drive Friday from noon to 4 p.m.

Spirits were high at 2 p.m. and workers were optimistic that they would meet their goal of 36 units of blood.

“In two hours, we’ve gotten 16,” said Whitney Sturm, a junior communication disorders and sciences major.

Roy Lanham, director of the Newman Catholic Center, said he thought the low turnout was because of the two-day blood drive earlier in the week, which was sponsored by Pemberton Hall’s service sorority, Phi Epsilon Mu.

“It will be difficult to make goal because it’s the third blood drive this week on campus,” Lanham said.

Another problem that contributed to the low turnout was that not everyone who signed up to donate was able to.

According to the American Red Cross’ general guidelines for giving blood, donors must be healthy, at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and must have 56 days between the last time they gave blood.

Certain diseases and disorders prohibit donors from giving blood. People who have certain piercings, tattoos and those who have traveled out of the country are asked to wait one year before donating.

Ty Siemsen, a freshman English major, had the total numbers at the end of the drive.

“We had 33 people sign in to donate blood, and we accepted 26 donations,” Siemsen said. “I still think we did well.”
