November to host three blood drives

The basement of Andrews Hall is the site for a two-day blood drive today and Wednesday, only one of three drives this month.

The EIU Blood Drive Committee works with the Red Cross to have at least one blood drive per month on campus, said Tracy Torbeck, donor recruitment account manager for donor services.

This drive, which will last from 1 to 6 p.m., is sponsored by Phi Epsilon Mu.

“Phi Epsilon Mu is Pemberton Hall’s service sorority and this will be our first blood drive,” said Christina Horton, a sophomore special education major. “The sorority’s personal goal is to have 75 units per day.”

This month, there is more than one drive scheduled because many organizations on campus have shown interest in sponsoring one, Torbeck said.

“We (usually) have four drives a year in the ballroom and four in Andrews Hall,” Torbeck said.

Raffle prizes donated by Petropics, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Arby’s, Family Video and Taco Bell will be given away during the drive, which is open to the community.

“The first 50 donors each day will receive a coupon for a free sandwich from McHugh’s Double Drive-Thru,” Horton said.

Donors need to bring valid identification with them including a driver’s license, Red Cross donor’s card or Panther ID, Horton said.

“It is an important issue for the entire community,” Horton said.

There will be another blood drive at the Newman Catholic Center on Friday in the Student Recreation Center on Nov. 30 and one in early December as well.
