NPHC rush still going

The National Panhellenic Council has been holding its rush process this week and it’s not over yet.

On Monday, the NPHC sponsored a resume workshop, given by Administrative Assistant Linda Moore, of Career Services. The workshop, held in the Greenup Room of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union, was aimed at helping students learn how to create resumes that will help them get a job in their career fields.

“Pie-A-Greek,” an event in which students could throw pies at Greeks for $1, took place on Tuesday in the South Quad.

“A lot of people came out to pie us or our adviser,” said NPHC President Erika Robinson.

Events continued on Wednesday, with the NPHC Rush in the Grand Ballroom of the union.

“(Wednesday) was basically an informational night for people to get a chance to know more about NPHC and what we do on campus,” Robinson said.

Beginning at 6 p.m., students interested in joining a historically African-American fraternity or sorority gathered at the informational and saw an overview of the NPHC. Then, the group of about 50 potential members split up into five groups to visit separate rooms featuring each sorority or fraternity.

There are three sororities and two fraternities in the NPHC. Each group spends 15 minutes in the rooms. The groups then gather again for a question and answer session.

After the informational, “if they want to inquire further, each chapter has a different way of bringing in new members,” said NPHC Vice President Tiera Robinson.

Each sorority and fraternity has its own formal informational after this week. Potential members will dress in business attire for the informational and the fraternity or sorority will have a presentation about what it takes to be a member.

On Friday, the NPHC will host a dating game and auction. “It’s a remake of the 70s hit Dating Game show,” Erika Robinson said.

Two females and one male contestant will each choose from a total of 18 participants.

According to how each participant answers certain questions, the contestants will choose their date. If the remaining participants wish, they can be auctioned off to the audience for a date, Tiera Robinson said.

The NPHC will host a union party in the union after the dating game. The party will begin at 10 p.m. and will feature a DJ and refreshments. The party will be open to all students. For non-members of the NPHC, admission is $5.

The NPHC tries to hold several union parties a year because “there’s not much to do in Charleston,” Erika Robinson said.
