Obama to answer questions via conference call at local rally

A local rally to support Democrats is to feature a conference call from Democratic Senate Candidate Barack Obama.

Eastern’s College Democrats are hosting the event to show support for Democratic candidates at the Democrat Headquarters in Charleston.

The event will also be a fund-raiser for Obama’s campaign and for local Democrats, said Benjamin J. Marcy, president of College Democrats at Eastern.

Obama will speak about his campaign and take questions from those who participate in the conference call. This party is only one of more than 100 Barack Obama parties being held around the world, even in Japan, Marcy said.

Democratic candidates for the county board and State’s Attorney Steve Ferguson will also be attending.

Speeches given by local candidates and the conference call from Obama will take place early in the night.

Marcy said people can register to vote and volunteer to become active in the Democratic party during the event.

John Kerry and Obama merchandise such as stickers, buttons and yard signs will also be available at the party.

There will be live entertainment, including local band Elsinore, and refreshments. The event is free and open to the public, but donations will be accepted. The party will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Democrat Headquarters at 513 Seventh St.
