Students working to bring Moore

Eastern’s Student Action Team and University Board lectures committee are working to get filmmaker Michael Moore to make an appearance at Eastern in early October.

Shannon Brende, coordinator of this event, has been contacting Moore through his agent in New York. According to his agent, Moore is very excited about doing an event in Illinois with the election coming up in less than two months.

If the plan runs smoothly, Moore will speak in the afternoon on Sunday, Oct. 10 in Lantz Arena. The lecture would be free of charge for Eastern students, and $5 or less for the general public. There will be tables set up at the event, where students can register to vote. Adam Howell, executive vice president of the student body at Eastern, hopes that the Black Student Union, the Interfraternity Council and the Panhellenic Council will help show support for this effort by setting up tables of their own.

“Controversy breeds activism,” Howell said. He hopes people both in favor of what Moore stands for, and those who aren’t will get excited about voting this year for the presidential election as a result of the lecture.

Money is the only road block when it comes to bringing the speaker to Eastern.

The College Democrats have raised more than $1,500 by asking faculty and staff for donations, according to their president, Benjamin J. Marcy.

Potentially, Moore could be “one of the biggest speakers we’ve had,” here at Eastern, Marcy said.

Howell and Brende will make their case in front of the Apportionment Board at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Tuscola-Arcola room in the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union to ask for funding from student fees. The meeting is open for anyone who might wish to show their support for the cause. Supporters can also sign one of the petitions being spread around campus and the city by various groups. The petitions will be presented at the Apportionment Board meeting.

Anyone else who would like to speak his or her mind on this issue can do so by posting on Eastern’s SPIN website.
