Council schedules bar hour discussion

A proposal to lengthen bar opening times an additional hour on weekends will be discussed by the Charleston City Council Tuesday.

Eastern’s Student Senate approved a resolution Oct. 29, requesting bar hours be extended to match those of other state schools.

Student Senate member Mike Walsh said the resolution passed 29-0, with one member abstaining.

A senate External Relation Committee meeting Nov. 7, allowed city council members, Mayor Dan Cougill, student representatives and any interested parties to discuss the proposal.

Council member Larry Rennels said he favored a test period, which would end in June.

A resolution changing Seventh Street to one-way southbound between Lincoln and Johnson avenues to accommodate the Doudna Fine Arts Center construction and renovations is also on the agenda.

Other matters to be addressed include:

-Authorization of a Graywood Foundation raffle to raise funds for a Lincoln statue and construction of the Lincoln Information Center in Charleston.

-Authorization of tourism fund expenditures

-Authorization of a settlement agreement between the city and Charleston Firefighters Union, IAFF Local 3200

-Authorization of an agreement between Cougill and interim City Manager Scott Smith, director of the parks and recreation department

-Authorization of a worker’s compensation bid award

-Authorization of an ordinance amending a comptroller ordinance

The city council will meet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Council Chambers of City Hall, 520 Jackson Ave.
