Chappelle shares dirty jokes

“Man this is a hard school to find. I saw the smurf village on the way down here,” Dave Chappelle told a crowd of more than 3,200 Friday

The sold-out performance was part of Chappelle’s Blackzilla tour.

His material ranged from masturbation and AIDS to his friend Tricky and oral sex.

Chappelle said after Sept. 11, other countries thought “America’s gonna be mad as shit. They’re gonna fuck some people up.”

He said in President Bush’s address after Sept. 11, the leader of North Korea was probably smoking something and thinking “America’s talkin’ some gangsta shit.”

Bush was “laying it down” when he said “‘you guys are either with us or with the terrorists.’ That’s some gangsta shit. Get down or lay down.”

The audience was very active in shouting comments to Chappelle during his performance.

Chappelle would shout comments back such as “Hold up mother fucker, let me talk too” and “I’m rich bitch.”

He also asked one audience member if it took them 20 minutes to muster up the courage to shout the comment or if it was spontaneous.

Chappelle said, “I don’t mind you guys shoutin’ stuff, but shout stuff that’s usable. Not shit I already said like I’m rich bitch… you’re not rich bitch.”

He also said, “don’t be a pussy about it. If you could dish it out, you could take it.”

Shawn Sobodka, a freshman physical education major, sat in the front row.

“Chappelle was worth the wait,” he said. “He ripped on me, but it’s okay.”

At one point in the show, a section in the balcony shouted they could not hear Chappelle.

Chappelle shouted, “I didn’t design this shit.

“It’s wild out here. You guys are just livin’ the wild life out here.”

He pronounced Illinois with the ‘s’ and was corrected by the audience.

“Why can’t I say Illinois (Ill-I-noise)? That just sounds cool,” he said.

Chappelle also joked about the “eee-eee-ee” sound in the Justin Timberlake song “Cry Me a River.”

He also said he was on the show “Star Search” with Timberlake and Timberlake lost.

Chappelle said he told Timberlake to keep his chin up at the time and then talked about how successful Timberlake is now.

“And I’m here in Illinois,” he said.

Chappelle said he has been booed, cussed at and has had bottles thrown at him while performing in the past.

Gree Barnes opened for Chappelle.

His material focused on cops, the conflict with Iraq, marijuana and Eastern’s football team.

The audience cheered the loudest when Barnes talked about marijuana.

Many students expected the content of Chappelle’s performance to be without limitations.

Hannah Goldberg, a junior speech communication major, said, “It was awesome. It was hilarious. I knew that there was going to be racist and perverted stuff because that’s just part of his act. I was rolling in my seat I was laughing so hard.”

Senior finance major Tavian McCalip said, “I thought it was hilarious. He really said some things I didn’t respect. He had no limit on what he could do or what he could say. Now I know why they call it the Blackzilla tour.”

Marla Thompson, a senior speech communication major, said she is a fan of The Dave Chappelle Show on comedy central and enjoyed his Eastern performance.

“Sure, parts of it were offensive, but to reach such a broad area of an audience, you gotta’ roll with the punches,” she said. “He handled comments from the audience well and handled it in a hilarious manner.”

Eastern biology instructor Amanda Poffinbarger said, “I’d only seen him on movies and saw about 10 minutes of his show (on Comedy Central) and thought I gotta’ get tickets to this.”
