Jewelry, undergarments stolen from sorority houses

An unknown amount of jewelry and undergarments were stolen from the Sigma Kappa and Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority houses during the weekend.

Those who had items stolen think the incident happened during Saturday’s Airband competition, a Greek Week event which Sigma Kappa won.

“I don’t really feel safe,” said Melissa Gornick, a former Sigma Sigma Sigma president and a senior speech communication major. “I had to sleep in my room last night. It’s just scary to know that it is that easy for someone to get in.”

Lt. Chris Stone of the University Police Department confirmed the thefts occurred Saturday at Sigma Kappa, 1034 Greek Court, and Sigma Sigma Sigma, 1030 Greek Court, but said he couldn’t release any more details. The incident is under investigation by UPD, he said.

“There was money left out in my room, and whoever it was didn’t take it, so we think this is some kind of prank,” said a freshman elementary education major and Sigma Kappa member who spoke on condition of anonymity. “We’re thinking it was a prank that went bad – someone decided to take some jewelry.”

She said five of her sorority sisters had items stolen and knew of one sister who had a necklace with the sorority’s letters stolen and another who had several items of “valuable jewelry” taken.

“I had some things stolen, but I’m not worried about that so much as I am about those who had jewelry taken,” she said. “We’re angry about that, and we want to get those things back.”

Gornick said the house’s location could have made it a target.

“Our chapter house is not backed up by another house; it’s out in the open,” Gornick said. “I really think people take for granted the safety of this campus and leave their doors unlocked when they shouldn’t.”

In response, Sigma Kappa held a chapter meeting Monday to stress the importance of locking doors and taking precautions.

“I really don’t know who could’ve done this,” Gornick said. “We don’t have any problems with any other groups.”
