Blood a back-up for military

Eastern’s Blood Drive Fair will be held Wednesday and Thursday in the University Ballroom of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union.

The American Red Cross and Alpha Phi Omega, a co-ed service fraternity, will sponsor the drive from 1 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The American Red Cross has organized back-to-back blood drives in the past but never in conjunction with Community Blood Services, said Kristin Giglietti of Alpha Phi Omega and Eastern’s Blood Drive Committee.

The drives are organized back-to-back to give interested donors who have work or other plans an opportunity to defer to the next day, Giglietti said.

Community Blood Services will sponsor the drive from noon to 6 p.m. Thursday.

This will be the first drive of the spring semester sponsored by Alpha Phi Omega, Giglietti said. Nearly 150 donors participated in the blood drive in September sponsored by Alpha Phi Omega.

The American Red Cross has a goal of 250 donors for the Wednesday drive, Giglietti said.

“The threat of terrorism being as high as it is right now because of the war with Iraq, I feel it is very important for the nation to get a good supply of blood on hand in the event of a terrorist attack in the U.S.,” Giglietti said. “The American Red Cross is the military’s back-up supply.”
