Privacy at top of senate discussion

The Faculty Senate Tuesday will discuss issues within the proposed tentative contract agreement regarding computer privacy.

The senate formed a subcommittee last semester after a faculty member brought members the issue of privacy.

The policy draft includes provisions ensuring the university recognize a faculty or staff member’s inherent right to the operation of computers provided to them and information stored on them.

“Any points not in the contract, the senate will want to look at,” said senate chair Anne Zahlan.

Zahlan said the senate also will hear discussion from associate political science professor Melinda Mueller and psychology professor Keith Wilson regarding textbook rental services.

“We’ve been informed the textbook rental has informed departments they will not buy any new textbooks for summer school classes,” Zahlan said.

Textbook rental will make an exception for new classes introduced to the summer curriculum. The senate textbook subcommittee will look at the issue, she said.

The Faculty Senate subcommittee on the Council on University Planning and Budget could offer the senate a resolution pertaining to faculty membership on the council, Zahlan said.

English professor John Allison said Matthew Monippallil, the subcommittee’s chair, will likely only deliver a committee report to the senate regarding the CUPB.

The senate will discuss the results of a faculty forum organized last month on the topic of academic freedom.

On Tuesday, the senate will combine results of the forum to see what recommendations can be made in the future, along with what committees can be formed to discuss them.

The senate also will talk about statewide testing at Illinois universities, Zahlan said.

The Faculty Senate will meet at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Booth Library Conference Room 4440.
