Personal training, fitness tests free for students

The personal training program, which started last year at the Student Recreation Center, added another trainer this year.

There are two personal trainers, a male and a female, available to provide personalized exercise programs for students. Both trainers, Paul Lotz, a junior physical education major, and Meg Gozdecki, a senior finance major, are American Council of Exercise-certified.

Students interested in scheduling an appointment with the trainer of their choice may sign up for an available time at the counter on the lower level of the recreation center.

Students should sign up one day in advance, and it is important students leave their phone number.

The first session provided by the trainer will be a consultation to establish fitness goals and set up a program.

“Really a lot of students are surprised to have such service at no cost. Normally a personal trainer makes anywhere from $30.00-$100.00 an hour. Our personal trainers with the same experience work at $6.50 an hour. The reason being we invested in their education and paid for their certification tests and in return they agreed to provide the service to students,” Ken Baker, director of the student recreation center, said.

Associated with the physical education department is the ATP lab or performance lab, located in Lantz room 156 between the recreation center and health studies department.

The lab provides assessments and programming for students by appointment or walk-in at certain operating hours. The assessment services provided include blood pressure, body composition, muscle strength and flexibility and VO2 submax bite test, which measures cardiovascular endurance.

The programs provided are free.
