Faculty Senate will focus on old business

After weeks of having visitors, the Faculty Senate will deal with old business at Tuesday’s meeting.

The senate will first take up a discussion on enrollment management, said Faculty Senate Chair Anne Zahlan, professor of English.

Three weeks ago, Frank Hohengarten, dean of enrollment management, and faculty representatives on the enrollment management advisory committee discussed how to control enrollment numbers and what type of students Eastern is looking to recruit.

At the meeting, Steve Scher, committee member and psychology professor, proposed a motion in which the Faculty Senate would request that Blair Lord, vice president of academic affairs, and interim President Lou Hencken give direction on whether the university should be addressing not only the number in enrollment, but the shape or quality of the student body.

Zahlan said the senate will consider Scher’s proposal and possibly make amendments. The senate will also examine the role of the enrollment management advisory committee, and make recommendations to the committee on how to strengthen its role in enrollment issues.

A follow-up discussion on a visit from Mihir Chatterji, assistant vice president for information technology services, is another item on Tuesday’s agenda. Chatterji spoke about electronic infrastructure at Eastern and the university’s plan to spend about $300,000 on a consultant to design a new computer network.

Zahlan said she was not sure if the senate will take any action or draft any resolutions on electronic infrastructure at Tuesday’s meeting, but the senate will make recommendations to the university’s policy on computer privacy.

Last week, Ronnie Deedrick, student vice president for academic affairs, requested an item concerning increased student participation on faculty search committees be pulled from the Faculty Senate’s agenda, and will now present another proposal to the senate.

The proposal, Zahlan said, outlines a new procedure Deedrick wants to institute to involve the Student Senate in grade appeals.

The Faculty Senate meets at 2 p.m. every Tuesday in Booth Library Conference Room 4440
