Comedian puts Green Acres in reverse

Sonya White had everyone in 7th Street Underground laughing hysterically Friday evening.

She kept the crowd amused with jokes about everything from drinking and dating to driving home on Interstate 57.

White is originally from the south, but recently moved to Chicago. Her comedy is about the Old South colliding with the new age and she said her sense of humor is like “Green Acres in reverse.”

She joked about observing people, places and situations. Her comedy stems from what everyone has in common, the funny side everyone shares.

White received her first big break as a comedian when she appeared on the sitcom “Big Brother Jake” in the early 1990s. She also said participating in the HBO USA Comedy Arts Festival in 1999 gave her air time on Comedy Central, Cartoon Network and MTV.

Her most memorable moment as comedian thus far was being able to purchase a condominium in downtown Chicago with the money she made from doing stand-up.

Her goal for the future is to someday have her own sitcom. She says that she doesn’t have to be the main character; just as long as she is a part of one.

White offered advice to any Eastern student interested in becoming a comedian.

“Keep getting up on stage at open mic venues,” she said. “Write from your own personal experiences with your family, dating misadventures, your first car, or anything that makes you unique.

“Find the uniqueness in yourself and use your talents, they are icing on the cake,” she said.
