Health workshop promotes sickness services

Students had the chance to learn about the different services offered on campus and various health concerns at the “Cold-Care Kit” workshop sponsored by the Health Education Resource Center and Health Services Tuesday night in the Charleston-Mattoon Room of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union.

Brian Calloway, nurse practitioner, Dollie Kilgore and Nita Shrader, registered nurses, were Health Services staff members who participated in the event.

The workshop was developed to give concerned students a chance to ask questions about health issues and encourage students to take better care of their health.

“This is the first workshop offered by the department, and I wanted students to get their overall questions answered and offer them plenty of information concerning health issues,” said Christie McCray-Yop, the sexual health education coordinator.

A video entitled “An Ounce of Prevention” was a big part of the workshop activities.

The video included suggestions on how to deal with cold and flu symptoms, how to handle germs, the spread of contagious bacteria and the importance of getting regular immunization treatments.

Health Services staff strongly encouraged students to take advantage of their resources by visiting the center and receiving regular check-ups.

Different gifts were offered to students who participated in this workshop such as hand sanitizers, cold-care kits and health information packets.

“This workshop is good for students to attend to be well educated and well aware of what the resource center has to offer,” said Catherine Frazier, freshman special education major.

“I suggest for everyone to get all the information necessary to ensure good health,” said Tom Ryan, freshman finance major.
