Faculty to discuss global security

The world has changed since Sept. 11, 2001. Tonight, several university faculty members will reflect on aspects in a forum titled, “National and Global Security: One Year After Sept. 11.”

The forum will be at 7 p.m. in the Charleston-Mattoon Room of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union.

David Carwell and Ryan Hendrickson, assistant professors of political science; Eric Hake, assistant professor of economics; and Scott Levi and Ed Werhle, assistant professors of history, will serve as panelists, presenting aspects of national and global security issues after Sept. 11.

The forum also will focus on what we know, where we are and how we have changed since the terrorist attacks.

Panelists will speak for about five minutes and members of the audience will have the opportunity to ask questions.

Hendrickson will serve as moderator for the event.

“We have a fundamentally different world after 9-11, and panelists will bring a variety of views,” Hendrickson said.

Levi will provide a unique perspective to the forum because he traveled to Uzbekistan this past summer.

Uzbekistan borders Afghanistan and is considered a “key staging point for the U.S. war on terror,” he said.

“We will examine the United States’ ability to lead the war on terror, and we will also address current issues on Iraq as well,” Hendrickson said.
