RHA to promote voter registration

Devising plans to receive more state funding was the highlight of the Resident Hall Association’s brief meeting Thursday.

While the meeting lasted only about 20 minutes, a proposal was made with hopes of gaining state attention as well as money.

When a discussion began about the lack of funding, several suggestions were made. One in particular was the idea of a voter registration campaign to show the legislators in charge of Eastern’s funding that students helped elect them.

“Schools don’t get the money we ask for because students don’t vote,” said RHA President Kevin Leverence.

Showing these officials that Eastern’s students contribute to whether or not they hold their positions may be just what it takes to get noticed, RHA members said. Therefore, the RHA will be actively promoting voter registration on campus.

The RHA also plans on looking over Campus Housing concerns mentioned during the meeting.

Residents in Lincoln Hall are hoping for change within their bathrooms. They are asking that paper towel dispensers or hand dryers be assembled.

Other concerns were mentioned about the inconsistency of the Internet’s availability on campus. Students said campus computer classes have been fighting for Internet time because of the surplus of file sharing taking place on Eastern’s system.

A firewall was installed to prevent students from file transfers, like music downloading, during the hours classes may need access. Concerns were mentioned that the firewall’s hours lasted beyond the previously proposed daytime hours.

The budget was also passed out during the RHA meeting, but the discussion was postponed until next week.

Appointing of chair positions was also delayed until next week’s meeting. Despite last week’s impressive turnout of applicants, RHA members are keeping the floor open another week for determining who will fill the open committee chairs.

Plans for the Fall Retreat will also be discussed at next week’s meeting.
