Sigma Lambda Beta hosts international dance revue

An international dance revue hosted by the Sigma Lambda Beta fraternity will showcase dances of different cultures, including Native American, Puerto Rican, African and Irish, at 7 p.m. Saturday in the University Ballroom at the Martin Luther King Jr. Union.

“We’ve got all of the continents covered except Australia,” Neftali Droz, Sigma Lambda Beta member and co-organizer of the International Dance Night said.

Droz said a variety of dances will be performed by a mixture of about 20 professional and student dancers.

Katie May, a freshman middle level education major, will perform an Irish dance. May competed in Scotland over Easter, and plans to dance Saturday with her two younger cousins.

The Kaskaskia River Dancers, a professional troupe from Mattoon, will perform a Native American dance in the diverse showcase.

“The purpose of the International Dance Night is to bring awareness and expose people to the diversity we do have on campus,” Droz said. “It will be very different from most shows, and we’re planning a big surprise.”

Sigma Lambda Beta, a new fraternity on campus, focuses on bringing education through cultural awareness, Droz said.

Droz said anyone is welcome to come to the free dance review, and he has invited other Greeks to come and wear their letters to support diversity as well.
