Roper interviews with faculty

The third candidate on campus to interview for the position of associate vice president for academic affairs for technology stressed his interest in expanding the role of the administrative position.

Roy Roper, the associate director of office information technologies and director of academic computing at Montclair State University in Upper Montclair, N.J., was the third of four candidates to participate in campus interviews in the ongoing search for an assistant vice president of academic affairs for technology.

Roper visited campus Tuesday and Wednesday to field questions from administration and faculty.

Roper was drawn to Eastern for the chance to develop the position of assistant vice president for academic affairs for technology.

“This position is not fully defined and has a lot of potential for growth. I would like to address the educatonal side of the position and would like to engage the general campus,” Roper said.

Roper also sees the need to keep Eastern up to date with technology.

“There needs to be a long range plan to stay ahead of the technological needs. This will mean that the administration will have to decide if they want to apply the resources,” he said.

Roper completed a master’s of arts in social anthropology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1978, then later completed a doctorate in social anthropology in 1985. The two previous candidates are Michael Hoadley, director of the Center for Interactive Technologies in Education and Corporations at the University of South Dakota, who was on campus April 8 and 9, and David Wang, associate vice president for information technology at Emporia State University, in Emporia, Kan. who was on campus April 14 and 15.

The next applicant is Frank Moore, executive director for information and insructional technology at Longwood College in Farmville, VA., who will visit Eastern April 22 and 23.
