Holocaust survivor’s son to speak on campus Tuesday

The son of Holocaust survivors will present a lecture on campus Tuesday titled “In Hitler’s Shadow.”

Yaron Svoray will begin his presentation at 7 p.m. in the University Ballroom in the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union.

This event is sponsored by the University Board. Executive members of the University Board heard Svoray speak at a National Association of Campus Activities meeting they attended in Peoria last fall.

“It was a moving performance. Everyone left stunned and amazed,” Alison Mormino, UB lectures coordinator, said.

Mormino mentioned that Svoray is an anti-terrorism fighter. She also said he will discuss reasons for the growth of terrorism. He will also talk about how to live a normal life where terrorism has become a part of everyday.

Mormino said Svoray was a detective for the Israeli Central Police and has been on the HBO documentary “The Infiltrator.” He went undercover as a neo-nazi to uncover the Nazi, anti-Semitism movement that still takes place in Europe. He will also talk about things he saw while undercover.

“(The lecture) should be a real eye-opener,” Mormino said.

Svoray has traveled around the world talking to colleges, universities and law enforcement agencies.

Although this lecture is open to the public, Mormino mentioned that political science and sociology majors will find exceptional meaning to it.

Admission is free for students with a Panther Card and $3 for general admission.
