ROTC brings its ground power to campus

Eastern’s ROTC program will bring the military equivalent of a civilian hummer to campus Thursday to “wow” students and try to attract new recruits.

A “HMMWV,” or a high mobility multi-wheel vehicle, will be on display from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the parking lot located immediately south of the campus pond pavilion.

The vehicle will contain military equipment as well as information for potential recruits, Lt. Gary Kelly, recruiter for Eastern’s ROTC Panther Battalion, said Wednesday.

“The truck is quite an experience,” Kelly said. “Not only is this a fun opportunity to see military equipment on campus, but this event is also to acclimate cadets.”

Kelly said he, along with Sgt. 1st Class Jerry Murrell of Charleston’s recruiting office, wants to recruit future cadets and make the current ROTC students aware that they can be commissioned as officers in the Army.

“We want to show the ROTC students all the opportunities they have after college,” he said.

Kelly said Murrell will be on hand to answer questions visitors may have.
