New play will begin today

Eastern’s theater department will perform “Master Harold and the Boys” as the first play in its “Talk Back” series Wednesday through Sunday at the Main Stage Theater.

The play is about a 17-year-old boy named Harold in South Africa. The focus of the play is the boy growing up with two black men and how he is pressured into fitting the mold of prejudice that the white world has toward his friends.

The play, directed by Clarence Blanchette, theater arts professor, will feature actors Aaron Lawson, Andrew Reaves and Marcus Hendricks.

“It’s a good show. If you are going to see it for a class, you will be pleasantly surprised,” Lawson, who is playing Mr. Harold, said.

“It’s a very good story,” he said.

As part of the “Talk Back” series there will be an informal discussion on topics relating to the play after its performance.

The talk back for “Master Harold and the Boys” will feature Roger Beck, a history professor, and Christopher Mitchell, an assistant theater professor, and will discuss the play’s author, Athol Fugard, and the question of apartheid in South Africa.

Tickets are on sale now in the Theater Box office. For ticket information, call 581-3110.

Admission for adults is $8 and for university staff it is $6. Student admission is $3.50 with a Panther Card and theater majors can enter the play for $2.50.

The play will run Wednesday through Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.
