International Tea will focus on Nigeria

“Spotlight on Nigeria” is the theme for this month’s International Tea on Tuesday.

The tea will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Charleston/Mattoon Room of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union.

This month’s tea is sponsored by Eastern’s African American Studies department.

Onaiwu Ogbomo, director of the African American Studies program, said that the tea will focus on Nigeria and its culture. The tea will be presented by Alex Iwara, a visiting professor at Rutgers University in Nubronswick, NJ.

Iwara is the director of African American Studies at the University of Ibadan in Ibadan, Nigeria. Ogbomo said Iwara will be speaking on the history of Nigeria and its culture.

Nigeria, a country located in western Africa, is the continent’s most populous country.

Nigeria recently transitioned into a civilian government after nearly 16 years of military rule by adopting a new constitution in 1999, according to yahoo.com.

Nigeria’s official language is English, and 50 percent of Nigerians practice the Muslim faith, the Web site said.

Nigeria.com states that many tourists are attracted to Nigeria because of its rich ethnic culture. The country holds many festivals throughout the year which focus on aspects of the Nigerian way of life.

Iwara will also show a documentary on Nigeria during the tea, Ogbomo said.

Everyone is invited and admission to the tea is free.
