hope for Health Fair to increase awareness

Forty different organizations and agencies will converge to the Student Recreation Center Wednesday to take part in the 2002 Health Fair.

The Health Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m Tuesday.

Eastern’s Health Education Resource Center and the BACCHUS Health Fair Committee will put on the fair, Eric Davidson, assistant director of Health Service, said.

“The Health Fair is held to increase student awareness about local health-oriented resources,” he said.

Davidson also mentioned that coming to the fair is a good way for students to connect with health professionals for a school interview assignment or possible internships.

“Many students have to interview professionals for various assignments,” he said. “Students have also gained internships or volunteer work from talking with the professionals at the fair in the past.”

A masseuse will give chair massages, Dr. Filipiak, a local chiropractor, will conduct assessments and screening concerning posture and Eastern’s Office of Safety Programs will conduct safety belt demonstrations at the fair, Davidson mentioned.

“The safety belt demonstrations are designed to show the significance in wearing seat belts,” Davidson said.

He also said that The American Red Cross, The American Cancer Society, The Big Brothers-Big Sisters of America Inc. and Eastern’s Health Services and Counseling Center, among others, will be present, giving information and doing assessments and screening.

The Athletic Training and Prescription Lab will do body compositions and assessments throughout the day, he said.

“(The Fair) usually goes pretty well,” Davidson commented. “This is our fifth or sixth year doing the fair.”

All Eastern students are invited. Admission is free.
