City to discuss water treatment plant, lights and other actions

The Charleston City Council will announce Friday a date for a public hearing about issuing bonds for the planned Water Treatment Plant.

“When we passed the resolution, it started the clock running,” Mayor Dan Cougill said with regard to the public hearing the city, by law, had to have once the resolution was passed for funding of the new Water Treatment Plant.

The council will also consider a proposal to pass a resolution that would place a traffic light at the intersection of Fawn Hollow Drive and Lincoln Highway Road. In addition, the council will consider another resolution to place two other lights at Woodfall Drive and 20th Street.

“The residents have told us it’s hard to see the road,” Cougill said. “It’s just a measure of safety.”

Besides the traffic lights, there is also a proposed ordinance to pass spending $11,100 on the July 4th fireworks celebration.

“Three years ago we joined with the city of Mattoon to put on one big fireworks show at the (Coles County Memorial Airport),” Cougill said about the expenditure. “Mattoon organizes it, helps offset the cost of a fireworks display.”

In other business, two proposed ordinances that would extend the city’s agreement with Scotty’s Lawn Care and Canon Cleaning for one more year, will be on the agenda for a vote.
