Spotlight will be on Nepal

“Spotlight on Nepal” is the theme for January’s International Programs’ International Tea.

The tea is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Charleston/Mattoon Room in the Martin Luther King, Jr. University Union.

Krishna Desar, an international student from Nepal who graduated from Eastern last December, said that the purpose of the monthly tea event is for students, faculty and members of the Charleston community to become better acquainted with Eastern’s international students.

Desar also mentioned that each monthly tea event usually has a focus on different cultures.

“(The tea) is held so people can become more familiar with different cultures and meet different people,” Desar said. “Basically, we will introduce our country (Nepal) to those who are unfamiliar with it.”

Anu Pradhan, a senior political science major and international student from Nepal, will begin the tea by giving a brief overview of Nepal.

Desar also said that another student from Nepal, Bijay Rout, will then present topics that have put Nepal in the news. Rout is an economics graduate student.

To round out the presentations, Mutki Upadhyaya, a professor in the economics department, will share his research he conducted in the summer of 2000 on the economic perspectives of Nepal, Desar commented.

Upadhyaya is also from Nepal.

Desar said that he will present slide shows with pictures of Nepal.

He also mentioned that the presenters will give the audience a quiz over the material discussed at the tea to “make the event more fun.”

Refreshments will also be provided at the event.
