Quilt and art exhibition starting this weekend at Tarble

A former Eastern faculty member, Rod Buffington, will bring his quilt and art exhibition to the Tarble Arts Center Saturday.

“Companions and Choices: Quilts & Paintings” is a “unique exhibition of contemporary quilts and watercolor collage quilts,” said Michael Watts, director of the Tarble Arts Center.

“The exhibition presents a sampling of quilts by some of the best known contemporary quilt makers paired with a companion painting/collage created by Buffington,” Watts said.

He also mentioned that Buffington, a former Eastern Art faculty member, Eastern alumnus and the event’s curator, “creates watercolor quilts-collaged painting that resemble regular pieced quilts.”

Along with Buffington’s paintings, the exhibition features various quilts by Virginia Avery, Rita Barber, Marian Brockschmidt, Marilyn Doheny, Caryl Bryer Fallert, Pat Holly, Sue Nickels, Roberta Horton, Libby Lehman, Diana Leone, Carole A. Liebzeit, Mary Mashuta, Paula Nadelstern, Yvonne Porcella, Judy Severson, Anita Shackelford, Ricky Tims and Jean Wells.

“Buffington will be on hand to autograph copies of the exhibition catalogs and posters that may be purchased from the Tarble Gift Shop,” he said.

Watts mentioned that Buffington will return to Eastern on Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. to present an artist’s lecture.

“Quilt artist Caryl Bryer Fallert will present the lecture ‘New Work: Inspiration and the Creative Process’ on Jan. 25 at 7 p.m.,” he said.

Fallert will also present two quilting workshops on Jan. 26.

Watts said that “Companions and Choices: Quilts & Paintings” will be on exhibit in Tarble until Feb. 27.

A reception to celebrate the exhibition will be held Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public.
