Council to pass tax funding

The Charleston City Council will meet Tuesday night to discuss possibly passing an ordinance that will allow spending $22,000 in tax increment financing funds for work to be done on The Station, 613 Monroe Ave.

Of the $22,000, $11,000 will come from a grant and $11,000 from a loan. The TIFF fund comes from a portion of the sales tax generated in the TIFF zone, which includes the businesses along the square, that is sent back from the state to the city to be spent on improvements in that zone. The Station is set to use the funds to replace its current metal awning with a fabric one, Mayor Dan Cougill said.

“These funds are allowing the owner to get rid of (deterioration) and fix up the building so it will last,” Cougill said.

The council will also look at passing an ordinance that will grant re-subdivision for Rich and Tonya Jensen in Normal Park Place.

“The Jensen’s want to sub-divided the land,” Cougill said. “It has to deal with lots and whether they think we should build houses on small lots.”

Also on the council’s agenda is a motion to accept the annual audit for the fiscal year 2000-2001.

Another motion will be proposed to accept the annual TIFF audit for 2000-2001.

There will also be a proposal to pass a consent agenda accepting bills payable, a city clerk’s report, which includes updates to the water treatment plant and ambulance service, and the payroll period ending December 29, 2001.
