Special Ed. awards to be presented

The Eastern Special Education Department will host their 21st Annual Honors Convocation on Saturday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the Grand Ballroom of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union.

Every fall, the Special Education Department presents awards to students with special education majors who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of leadership, scholarship and service, Denise Smith, assistant special education professor, said.

Approximately 90 awards will be given. The two most prestigious awards are two scholarships that will be presented, Smith said.

The 7th annual presentation of the Stephen Wayne Kennard Memorial Scholarship will be the highlight of the ceremony.

“This scholarship will be given to two students who will be student teaching this year,” Smith said. “They must hold at least a 3.0 GPA, also.”

Another scholarship that will be presented is the College of Education and Professional Studies’ Telefund Scholarship. This scholarship will be presented to students who wish to pursue professional development opportunities in the field of special education, Smith noted.

Recognition will also be granted to graduating seniors in the special education department. Officers of two student organizations, Sigma Rho Epsilon and Student Council for Exceptional Children, will also be recognized during the ceremony.

All interested persons are invited to attend. There will be no admission charge.
