Univeristy buildings have power outages

Parts of Andrews and Carman Halls temporarily lost power when yesterday’s storm pounded through Eastern’s campus.

Both residence halls lost power around 3 p.m. Wednesday, said Carol Strode, Facilities, Planning and Management director.

While Strode did not know exactly what caused the power outages, she said “it was probably lightning or a strong wind.”

The storm also knocked down trees on Ninth Street and near Lantz Arena, Strode said. Grounds crews were sent to both sites within minutes to clean up the fallen trees.

Doug Howell, Carman Hall resident director, said the power outage at his hall lasted for a matter of seconds.

“The lights went off for a couple of seconds; then, they came back on for a couple of seconds; then, they went off again; then, they came back on for good,” Howell said.

The only problem, he said, was that the loss of power tripped the hall’s fire alarm; however, electricians were quickly able to turn it off.

Katie Landers, Andrews’ assistant resident director, said the lights went out in the lobby of her residence hall for about five to 10 minutes causing the fire doors to close.

However, Landers said, no dorm rooms in Andrews lost power.

“The lights dimmed, but the hall floors weren’t affected at all,” she said.

Students in neighboring Thomas and Lawson Halls said their lights flickered but did not go out.

Strode said the university was prepared for yesterday’s storm.

“We always have people on staff ready to fix things whether it’s acts of God or intentional damage,” she said. “We’re ready to fix things. That’s what we do.”

Strode also said yesterday’s storm was “nothing out of the ordinary.

“It’s typical of a fairly strong storm,” she said.
