Cars on parade route will be towed

Some Charleston residents will awake to find their cars towed if they park on certain streets Friday night and Saturday morning.

As a precaution to maintain safety during Eastern’s Homecoming parade Saturday, parking will be prohibited on a selection of streets.

“The parade wouldn’t pass through unobstructed if cars were parked on the streets,” Roger Cunningham, assistant chief of the Charleston Police Department, said.

From 3 a.m. to noon Saturday, parking will be restricted on the following streets: Monroe and Jackson avenues between Sixth and Seventh streets, Sixth Street from Monroe Avenue to Lincoln Avenue, Seventh Street from Monroe to Johnson avenues, and Hayes Avenue between Seventh and Ninth streets, Lt. Sweet of the University Police Department, said.

Also, Sweet said parking will not be allowed on Campus Drive, Seventh Street to Fourth Street and Seventh Street from Johnson to Roosevelt avenues from 5 p.m. Friday to noon on Saturday.

All vehicles parked on the streets after the designated date and time will be towed at the owner’s expense by Cobble Towing, 150 N. Fifth St., Cunningham said. Sweet said the cost for towed cars would be between $45 to $50.

More police will be on duty to ensure the safety of those watching the parade along with those participating in it.

“University, campus, city, county and state police will all be on duty due to the parade,” Sweet said.
