Committee looking at ways to lure Bears

The city’s plans to add four new flashing lights to Fourth Street will be one item to discussed at today’s external relations committee’s meeting.

The external relations committee contains members of the City Council and Student Government and will meet at 4:30 p.m. in the Kansas Room of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union.

The city will give an update on when the four flashing lights will be installed along Fourth Street, said Hugh O’Hara, external relations committee chair. Two lights will be on each side of Fourth Street by Stevenson Hall and two on each side of the street by Coleman Hall.

Another issue on the agenda is what the city plans to do to assist in convincing the Chicago Bears to bring its training camp to Eastern, said Mayor Dan Cougill.

“What we’re willing to do is to provide the manpower to do the improvements,” Cougill said.

The committee also expects to hear an update on whether any interest has been shown in the Hardee’s restaurant location, O’Hara said. Problems have surfaced with finding a business to come to the location because of the high rent and because the owners want a portion of the profit.

Cougill said he will give a presentation on what construction will go on in Charleston during the summer months and when the Fourth Street bridge will be completed.

The Zoning Steering Committee has not met yet this month, so it will have nothing to report, Cougill said.
