Candidates will express views at forums this week

A forum for both the mayor and the City Council candidates sponsored by the League of Women Voters is being held from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening at the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church’s Moriarty Hall, 921 Madison Ave.

There is no charge for the forum, and it is open to the public, said Edith Hedges, member of the League of Woman Voters.

The first hour will be dedicated to the two mayoral candidates, Mayor Dan Cougill and Clancy Pfeiffer, and the second hour to the City Council candidates Marge Knoop, Larry Rennels, John Winnet, Faye Cobble, Lorilei Sims, Michael Strange and Tom Watson.

The audience will write questions on notecards, which will be given to a moderator, and any candidate will be able to answer the questions, Hedges said. At the end of the question and answer session, the candidates will be able to give a brief summary of their platform, Hedges said.

“We would love to have some of the college kids come down,” Hedges said.

Students will have more chances to hear the opinions of the candidates for City Council and mayor at two other forums this week.

Cougill and Pfeiffer will hold a discussion for students at 7 p.m. Thursday in Lumpkin Hall Room 122, and a forum for only the mayoral candidates will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Best Western Worthington Inn, 920 W. Lincoln Ave.
