Despite lack of nominations, sorority continues kind acts

With all the cold weather Charleston has been having, Sigma Gamma Rho Inc. took it upon themselves to spread a little warmth around campus.

On Thursday, the sorority surprised the Housing Office with free breakfast as a part of its random acts of kindness its members have been doing around campus in honor of African-American Heritage Month.

“That was so nice,” said Susan Mathews, a housing administrator. “They just walked in with boxes of muffins and roles and gallons of orange juice and wanted us to have a happy day. It was really nice of them to do that.”

Mathews said it was nice to get the change of a little bit of praise from the students instead of all the complaints they normally receive. “We appreciated it an awful lot,” she said.

Sigma Gamma Rho accepted nominations for the random acts all throughout the month of February; however, they only received two nominations. As a result, they are continuing the random acts of kindness through the month of March, said Monique Cookbey, Sigma Gamma Rho on-campus graduate adviser.

Cookbey said to help out with the cost of the random acts, they are going to go to local businesses in Charleston and ask for donations for the gifts. Cookbey said the sorority just could not afford to keep doing them on its own.

“We’ll do what we can,” Cookbey said.

She said even though they are still accepting nominations, they will not rely only on them.

“Since nobody has nominated anyone, we’ll take upon ourselves to continue,” Cookbey said.

The sorority already has its next few random acts planned, and they include two nominations they did receive during the month of February. The next act is planned for Thursday, Cookbey said.

Anyone interested in making a nomination can send them to Cookbey through her e-mail account at [email protected]. Nominations must include a two to three sentence paragraph explaining why the person or department deserves a random act of kindness, Cookbey said.
