All-student show begins Sunday

The Tarble Arts Center will have its annual all-student show starting Sunday at 2 p.m.

The show will open with an awards ceremony that is free admission. The awards that will be presented include the Best-Of-Show Award that includes a $200 cash award and the Merit Award that includes a $50 cash award, said Michael Watts, director of Tarble Arts Center.

The recipients of the awards are selected by the art department faculty, Watts said.

This exhibition showcases the works of the undergraduate art students and will include paintings, drawings, prints, ceramics, weavings, metals and sculptures, 2D and 3D designs, graphic designs and digitally produced photographs and paintings. The digital paintings are a new entry this year, Watts said.

Ninety three students entered 304 pieces this year, and 68 students and 127 pieces made it into the show.

The works are judged by three professionals in the visual arts area. The judges rotate each year.

This year’s judges are Lyle Salmi from Milikin University, instructor of 2D foundations; Laura Strand from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, instructor of weaving; and Matt Hutton, a graphic designer for Spinlight Studios in Champaign.

The judges change every year so their opinions aren’t affected by the students who enter the pieces, Watts said.

Watts said the show is important for students.

“It’s a way for the students to get work out,” he said. “It serves the students and it serves the public.”

The Tarble Arts Center is located on Ninth Street at Cleveland Avenue on campus. The all-student show will run from Sunday until March 25 and is co-sponsored by the Eastern Art Department.
