Officers like their new ride

The University Police Department’s recent addition of a brand new blue Chevrolet police car has brought a sigh of relief to police officers.

“We had a Ford before,” said Art Mitchell, police officer for the University Police Department. “We like Chevrolet better than Fords though.”

Chevrolets have been the department’s preference when it came to police cars.

“We have had Chevrolets before, and we were fairly satisfied (with them),” he said.

The department obtained the new car about two weeks ago. The reason for the new car stemmed from the deteriorating condition of its previous Ford police car, Mitchell said.

“The reason we got a new one was because the other one wore out,” he said.

Mitchell said the funds for the blue vehicle were provided to the department through state funds.

The addition of the new police car marks the second car the state has provided the university police department, he said.

“A few months ago, we got an unmarked car that has the lights in the back windows,” Mitchell said.

He said the department still is waiting on a new set of low rider lights and the installation of radios in the new vehicle.
