Charleston High School baseball junior Wyatt Gordon stepped up to the plate in the seventh inning of the Trojans game against Teutopolis with the game tied 3-3.
Facing a 2-1 count, Gordon had a feeling for the next pitch.
“I saw a few pitches in the at bat and I felt he was going to throw a fastball,” Gordon said.
He swung and hit the ball into right field. Senior Rohen Walters, who got on base the at bat before off an error, ran from first to home and slid in to score the winning run in Charleston’s 4-3 victory on Monday at Baker Field.
“[I] was lucky enough one of my teammates was battling and got on base so I could hit that,” Gordon said.
Charleston head coach Jim Miller said he was confident seeing Gordon’s hit.
“He gave it a ride,” Miller said. “I was thinking we’re scoring no matter what.”
Teutopolis’s starting pitcher, senior and Lindenwood University commit Austin Borries, pitched a complete game in the loss. In six and two-thirds innings, he racked up nine strikeouts.
“I thought Austin [Borries] did a good job on the mound,” Teutopolis head coach Justin Fleener said.
He opened the scoring in the first inning hitting an RBI single to go up 1-0.
In the bottom of the frame, Charleston loaded the bases with three singles. Senior Chase King hit the fourth of the inning and drove in the tying run.

The teams would remain scoreless until the fifth, when the Wooden Shoes got runners on second and third when a passed ball allowed a run to score to retake the lead.
In the next at bat, Jason Kreke hit a ball into right field where senior Russel Applegate would throw it home to Wyatt Gordon, who tagged out Aidan Niemerg to end the frame.
Charleston got on base with a Ty Helton walk and a Gordon double. Applegate hit a ball to the second baseman and beat the throw to first. The throw itself got away, and Helton and Gordon scored to tie the game.
“We were more patient at the plate and started swinging at strikes,” Miller said.
Miller said he planned on using a rotation of seven pitchers but ending up using senior Quinn Taylor for five innings due to his performance.
“As well as he was throwing, we threw that out the window and went with a different game plan,” Miller said.
Charleston goes into its next Apollo conference series against Mt. Zion who is undefeated in the conference.
The Trojans are away on Tuesday and home on Wednesday.
