Three executive board members of the student government association have resigned after a vote to remove them due to ineligibility failed at an emergency meeting on Monday.
The emergency meeting came after the three members were notified that they were no longer eligible to hold office because they did not satisfy the GPA requirement outlined in the student body constitution.
Resignations were made official at the EIU student senate meeting on Wednesday.
Following the resignations, former Vice President of Student Affairs Claire Weber was appointed as Student Body President, leaving three offices vacant.
Applications for vacant executive positions are active until Oct. 1, with platform statements being presented at the senate meeting on Oct. 6.
Former Executive Vice President Anna Jones and former Vice President of Academic Affairs John Slater submitted resignation letters that were read at the meeting.
Former Student Body President Reagan Robson did not submit a letter but resigned due to personal issues and being ineligible, according to Speaker of the Senate Megan Fox.
Jones wrote that she resigned because she was no longer able to perform her duties as a result of being ineligible.
“Within this limbo, I am unable to contribute as I was previously led to believe with the votes in my favor,” Jones wrote.
Jones also wrote that she thought she should have still been able to serve until an election.
“I believe that in all cases of resignations or terminations, especially in this one, the executive board member—in this instance myself—should have been able to continue with my duties until the end of the emergency election to still allow for the constant progress that the student government association strives to achieve,” Jones wrote.
Slater said that he felt that his GPA being .03 below the 2.75 requirement had no effect on his ability and work. He wrote that he resigned because a vote to remove him would otherwise have been required at every future meeting, and that would have gone against his platform of streamlining SGA.
“There is no reason to drag out this process,” Slater wrote.
Also during the meeting, the senate approved a resolution calling for unused spaces on campus to be reviewed as potential practice spaces for EIU dancing, modeling groups and RSOs; as well as calling for the review of the scheduling systems for spaces that are currently in use.
Representatives from modeling and dance groups at Eastern spoke to the senate.
According to senior business major and Vice President of Couture Models’ of EIU Jamaya Fuller, their organization was only given around a month’s notice that they were not allowed to use the floors of the Student Recreation Center due to their heels.
Fuller said that their heels would not do any damage to the floors.
“It’s not like we are scraping our heels on the floor,” Fuller said. “You guys let gym shoes on, and they scrap up the floor more than heels.”
Sophomore fashion merchandising major and Kat Walk Treasurer Kahmyla Scott said it was unfair for no notice to be given before the decision was made that modeling RSOs couldn’t use the floors.
“You’re not supposed to blindside your RSOs,” Scott said. “At the end of the day, we’re what bring people with different diversities [and] different talents altogether.”
Kassidy Prebstle, the director of EIU dancers and co-author of the resolution, said that due to the limited spaces, it’s hard for her group to get a space to practice at a good time.
“I do feel as though we are being pushed to the side by the campus,” Prebstle said. “It brings on a lot of unnecessary tension between all of us because we are fighting for the same space.”
Fuller also said that there is a lack of spaces with mirrors, which makes doing campus events challenging.
