A county-wide burn ban will come into effect tonight at midnight, according to Coles County Emergency Management Agency Director Jim Hilgenberg.
According to County Board Chairperson Darrell Cox, dry weather throughout Coles County has made conditions favorable for wildfires and other uncontrolled events.
Any open burning, like of weeds, leaves or trash, is not allowed under the temporary ban. Fireworks are also not allowed. Small campfires in fire rings or contained fire pits are allowed as long as they are attended to and fully extinguished when finished, said Hilgenberg in the press release. Breaking the burn ban can result in a $100 fine.
Cox said in the press release the burn ban will be in effect until significant rainfall occurs over Coles County. An official notice will be issued when the burn ban is lifted.
