A Charleston squad car parked in the area of the shots fired call after a suspect had been placed into custody at Eastern Illinois University on Aug. 27.

Charleston police, EIU police and the Coles County Sheriff’s Department responded to the area of 4th Street and Buchanan Avenue at approximately 1:44 AM to the sound of shots fired.

Police had a strong presence in the campus area into the early morning hours of Sunday, possibly due to it being the first full weekend back. As crowds across campus started to thin out, the sound of shots being fired could be heard.

The sound came from an area to the North of Eastern’s campus. Officers rushed to the area of 4th and Buchanan, near a large apartment complex. Officers arrived on the scene in approximately less than one minute.

Police radio chatter indicated reports of a male who had fled the scene. Officers also advised that they had located shell casings in the area.

Officers had one subject in custody by approximately 1:55 a.m., about 11 minutes after the initial sound of shots fired.

Officers worked to collect evidence on the scene and transport it to the police station. Radio chatter indicated officers had gathered three shell casings from the scene. The Charleston Fire Department did not respond to the scene.
