Charleston City Council approves budget for fiscal year

Charleston City Council approves budget for 2023-2024 fiscal year. (Rob Le Cates)

Approving the City Budget for the Fiscal Year beginning May 1, 2023, and ending April 30, 2024.

City Council met Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. and approved 18 items that were on the agenda.

The engineering department budget is $1.139 million.

The police department projected expenses for 2023 is $3,994,541.

The fire department’s projected budget is $1,837,550, which will cover the following:

  • Electricity and gas,
  • Water,
  • Repair of vehicles,
  • Repair of operating equipment,
  • Repair of radios,
  • Repair of buildings and facilities,
  • Write-off of bad debt,
  • Professional memberships,
  • Education and training expense,
  • Travel expenses,
  • Haz-Mat incident expense,
  • Other contractual services.

The motor fuel tax fund 2023 projected budget is $1,037,684.

The water and sewer fund is $6,283,144.

City Council met Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. and approved 18 items that were on the agenda.

The Council approved the Bid Award, which accepted lighting material bids for Linder Sports Complex for the price of $72,125.

The Council also approved authorizing waivers of bidding procedures for purchase from single source vendors such as the police department.

Additionally, the approval of intergovernmental agreement for mutual aid with Clark County Ambulance Service, Greenup ambulance, Kansas Fire Protection District, Mattoon Fire Department, Mitchell-Jerdan Ambulance Service and Oakland Fire Protection District took place at the meeting.

The street to the east of Ike’s will be closed from 11:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. will be closed due to an alley party.
