Volleyball team looks to solidify OVC standings against Southern Indiana

The Eastern volleyball team will take the court for its final home game of the season against OVC newcomer Southern Indiana Wednesday at 6 p.m. 

The Panthers are currently in fifth place in the OVC with an 8-7 conference record. They are just half a match back from both Southeast Missouri and Morehead State who are tied for third place.

The Panthers’ two most recent losses came at the hands of Tennessee Tech. The first match saw the Panthers lose 3-1 while the second match went all five sets with the Golden Eagles pulling away with the 3-2 victory. 

Two Panthers had career weekends against the Golden Eagles. 

 Junior outside hitter Giovana Larregui Lopez had 43 kills over the weekend with her new career high of 26 kills coming during the second match. 

Freshman setter Catalina Rochaix had 44 assists in the first match. Overall, Rochaix had 68 assists while averaging 7.56 assists per set.  

Sophomore outside hitter Kaitlyn Flynn had 27 kills in the first match. 

The Panthers and the Screaming Eagles met once earlier in the season for the first time in history. The Panthers defeated the Screaming Eagles 3-1 while holding them to just 36 kills throughout the four sets. 

The Panthers were also able to collect 83 digs during the matchup. 

The Screaming Eagles will enter the match Wednesday evening with a 1-14 record in the OVC and an overall record of 1-25 

Leah Anderson leads the Screaming Eagles offensively with 307 kills, ranking sixth in the OVC in kills per set, averaging 3.23. 

Abby Bednar and Carly Sobieralski are also contributing on offense this season as Bednar had over 200 kills and Sobieralski is seventh in the OVC in assists. 

Paris Downing had 80 blocks for the season, ranking seventh in the OVC in blocks per set. Keira Moore is also seventh in digs per set, averaging 3.87. 

Looking ahead, the Panthers will wrap up their regular season as they will travel to St. Charles, Mo to take on Lindenwood Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 7 p.m.
