During the meeting Tuesday, Charleston City Council approved a resolution allowing Mayor Brandon Combs to pick delegates for the 2021 Annual Conference of the Illinois Municipal League.

This will be held Sept. 23 to Sept. 25 in 2021 at the Chicago Hilton and Towers Hotel. As stated in the resolution, this conference is “for the purpose of researching and learning new techniques/procedures applicable to municipal and/or local government operations for the benefit of the residents of the City of Charleston, Illinois.”

A Public Hearing was conducted before the meeting at 6:15 p.m. to consider the annexation of certain property owned by Diane E. Halsey.

The property is adjacent to Charleston’s existing limits, and it was requested to connect and receive water from Charleston along with other amenities provided by Charleston.

During the meeting, the council also approved an ordinance of the petition from Diane E. Halsey for the annexation of 1014 W. Hayes Avenue to the City of Charleston.

The land location will now be, “annexed to, incorporated in, and made a part of the City of Charleston, a Municipal Corporation, in Coles County, Illinois, all in accordance with 65 ILCS Section 5/7-1-8,” as stated in the ordinance as well as the cooperate map amended.

Two announcements were made at the city council meeting, both about the appointment of two people by Combs.

The first was Judy Looby to a three-year term on the Carnegie Library Board of Trustees.

The second was Steve Hutti to a three-year term on the Firefighters Pension Fund Board.

The council was able to meet and vote on the agenda in person due to lifts on the local state of emergency.

The next City Council meeting will be held July 6.
