Student Senate to swear in senators

Theo Edwards, Student Government Reporter

Student Senate will be swearing in two new senators, students Nidhi Patel and Jasmine Yusef, during Wednesday’s meeting, raising the amount of student senators to 13 senators.

There is the potential of one more senator joining and if they do, the number of senators will be 14, fulfilling the needed amount to reach quorum and make meetings official.

With quorum, the appointment of Ashley Bartly and Carey Hendrix to the Student Dean Advisory Council will be discussed and available for approvement.

Old business revisited will be the proposed housing and dining rate increase as discussed two weeks ago during the last Student Senate meeting, as well as a suggested food campus pantry topic.

Student senators were given time to talk to students on campus before discussing this meeting on whether Student Senate will support these two measures.

Kent Martin, Chief of Eastern’s University Police Department and Public Safety Officer, will be included in the audience participation portion of the meeting since he is giving a presentation.

Committee reports will resume this week for the following committees, along with new chair members for each committee:

· Academic Affairs – Prabin Karki

·Alumni Relations – Marcus Powell

·Diversity Affairs – Constance Young/Kassandra Amaya

· External Relations – Seth Yeakel/Natalie Mitlyng

·Internal Affairs – Katelynn Alexander

·Student Affairs – Subodh Khanal

·University Enhancement – Francesco Romano

Student Action Team is a sector of student government that works to represent social and political interest of students at EIU and present them to elected officials of the Illinois Government.

They work towards improving conditions ranging from social, academic, and financial conditions for Eastern students.

It was considered an unofficial meeting due to none of the members being appointed to Student Action Team officially yet.

They discussed brief introductory matters and advertisement for new members.

The next Student Senate meeting will be held March 10. The Senate will begin meeting in person when they are able to meet quorom.
