Two girls volunteering for the Illinois High School Association, put their feet on the starting block for a high school competitor during the 4×400-meter relay Class 1A preliminary Thursday at O’Brien Field.

The Class 1A preliminary round (semifinals) for the Illinois High School Association Boys Track and Field state finals were held on Thursday.

More than 100 schools competed in the 18 preliminary round events.

The winners of each event, including teams or individuals with the best times, advanced to the final competition on Saturday.

Class 2A and 3A schools will compete in the semifinals on Friday starting with Class 2A field events (the long jump, triple jump and high jump) at 8 a.m. Class 2A track events kick off at 9 a.m. with the 4×800-meter relay and extend until 12:18 p.m.

Class 3A field events start at noon and track events start at 1 p.m. and end at 4:30 p.m.
