Athletic department to share its progress

Faculty Senate members will be updated on the progress of the athletic department at their meeting Tuesday.

Tuesday’s meeting will take place at 2 p.m. in the Booth Library, Room 4440.

Athletic Director Barbara Burke said her presentation will include graduation rates for student athletes and other statistics. The athletic department makes this presentation to Faculty Senate once a year.

“My comments will be very general in nature,” Burke said

John Henry Pommier, the Facutly Senate chairman, said he is looking forward to hearing the progress of the student athletes.

“We have some of the better numbers in the state, we have good academic standards for our athletes, they are students as well as athletes, our coaching staff does a great job with that,” Pommier said. “It’s important for (the faculty) to hear what athletics offers, and vice versa.”

Also on the agenda is the Committee on Assessment of Student Learning report.

Karla Sanders, the co-chairwoman of the CASL committee will give the report.

“(We) will be presenting (the CASL) annual executive summaries of data pertaining to the four undergraduate learning goals,” Sanders said.

Pommier said there are no proposals to be voted on at this week’s meeting.

“Sometimes after hearing a presentation, one of the 15 faculty senators will provide a resolution to address an issue on campus raised by a presentation or in general,” Pommier said. “These, along with committee proposals, are things we vote on, however there are none on the agenda this week.”

Pommier also talked about issues to be discussed at future meetings including the Capital Campaign Kickoff at the March 2 meeting.

At the senate’s March 22 meeting, there will be a presentation addressing campus safety including the reaction to the suspicious package incident that happened in January.
