CAA cancels third meeting this month

For the third time this month, the Council of Academic Affairs has canceled its weekly meeting.

Larry White, the CAA chairman, is the person who decides if the CAA will hold a meeting each week or not.

“(The weekly meeting) is in the bylaws so we have the time reserved, but sometimes we don’t need it,” White said.

The CAA was originally intended to discuss possible changes to the political science major and minors, the public relations minor, and a possible film studies internship option.

One of these proposals includes changing the required credit hours for the public relations minor from 18 to 15 hours.

Other possible changes include the removal of the internship requirement, as well as several classes.

Both the political science proposals and the public relations proposal would take effect in the fall 2011 semester.

Because there were not enough items on the agenda to warrant a meeting, White decided to cancel for this week.

“Sometimes we have a small agenda, so we won’t have a meeting,” White said. “It keeps the amount of meetings down until we have a lot items to act on. If we meet weekly for only a few items, then that is not the best use of (the council’s) time.”

White said the deadline for departments to submit proposals for the agenda is 10 a.m. on the Monday before the meeting.

From there, White decides whether to meet or not.

“It’s often a toss up. If a lot comes in, then we will have a meeting,” White said.
