UB to put on open mic night

The University Board will put on an open mic night at 7 p.m. today in 7th Street Underground in the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union.

Judging the open mic will be three local musicians who play at the bars in Charleston. Prizes will be awarded in the form of gift cards.

Anyone can attend the open mic to perform music, comedy routines, spoken word or anything else they choose.

Cassie Falco, a sophomore family and consumer science major and the main stage coordinator for the UB said she hopes for a good turnout.

“At the first open mic night that (the) UB hosted this year, around 65 participants showed up,” Falco said.

Falco said she would like to have new talent as well as old perform.

Morgan Saunders, a freshman journalism major, said she plans to attend the open mic today.

Since this is Saunders’ first open mic, she is just going to watch.

“I want to get a feel for the atmosphere, and maybe at the next one I will decide to perform,”

Saunders said. Saunders said she would do poetry when she decides she is ready to perform.

“Poetry to me is the best way I know how to express myself,” Saunders said.

She said she is choosing not to perform because she has stage fright.

“Poetry is very personal to me and it’s hard to share a part of myself with strangers,” Saunders said.

This event is free of charge.
